Overview

Nara was the capital of Japan from 710 to 784. It was the source of Japan's earliest art and literature and the location for many early Japanese historical events and myths. Buddhism first flourished here. Today, Nara is a beautiful destination and features great sites to visit. There are eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites In Nara including Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Besides these historical assets, the charm of Nara is deer roaming around Nara Park. Nara deer was considered as a divine messenger and has been protected well.  Feeding them is one of the most fun part of traveling in Nara!

Detailed Itinerary

Meet at Kyoto Station and take a train to Nara. From Nara Station, you will take a bus to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. On the way to the shrine, you will see a number of wild deer roaming around a huge park and street. Kasuga Taisha Shrine is famous for its beautiful stone lanterns and bronze lanterns which have been donated by worshipers. The lanterns are lit twice a year for the lantern festivals. On the way to Todaiji Temple, you will walk through a huge park called Nara Park. Nara Park is certainly one of the most popular places to visit in the city. The highlight of the park is the deer who roams around the park freely. You will enjoy feeding them deer crackers which can be purchased in the park. Afterward, you will be heading to Todaiji Temple. Todaiji Temple is the most important temple in Nara. It was founded in 752, but many of the buildings are reconstructed in the 17th century.The Big Buddha Hall is the principal hall and the largest wooden building in the world. The Big Buddha statue which is made of bronze sits in the hall. You can walk or take a bus to get back to the station.
